The 2nd Ordinary General Assembly of our Izmir Branch convened in Izmir on March 22, 2021. In the general assembly held in accordance with the rules of masks and social distance, while our President Pevrul Kavlak was elected as the Chairman of the Council, our Deputy Chairman Uysal Altundağ and our Manisa Branch No. 1 Ercan Dereli were the Vice-Presidents.
Speaking at the General Assembly as the Chairman of the Council, our President Kavlak started his speech by expressing the difficulties experienced in the pandemic process that affected all humanity and said: “Let's go back a year together. What do you remember when you look back? Do not think, let me answer this question for you. We only remember our normal life routines. Waking up in an ordinary day, hug our families, children go to school, I remember falling on the road to go to work. This was all normal back then. It was normal to shake hands, hug, arm in arm on the roads. It was normal to meet in a conversation without knowing the distance, to applaud the team we supported in the match, and to hug our loved ones on holidays. Now we have forgotten our normals. A virus that we cannot see with our eyes has taken our lives captive. Yes, it has been exactly a year. Looking back today, I don't remember having such a strange year before. I think you would agree with me.”
“We didn’t keep believing and trusting each other.”
Kavlak stated that he is proud of the metalworkers for their sacrifice during the pandemic period in the labor struggle, and continued his speech as follows: “Our country and our world are going through difficult times. We are confronted with no doubt the greatest tragedy of modern times. It is clear when this disaster called Covid-19 started, but it is not clear when it will end. The light at the end of the tunnel just doesn't get clear. When we say that it becomes clear, now we see the end of the tunnel, this time we encounter something called mutation. Our lives come and go in the triangle of viruses, their mutants, and the vaccine. I know you are tired now. We are all tired. We are tired of wearing masks, being distant, using disinfectants, and looking at each other with suspicion. In the past, conversation with our friends used to be the mundane business of our lives, now we talk about who has an immune body. Are you aware our habits have changed. We do what is necessary to protect ourselves. For example, when going a shopping mall, we automatically stretch our wrist so that they measure our temperature. When we go out, we automatically wear masks and check our HES code while traveling. But my friends, some of our habits have never changed. We did not keep believing and trusting each other. We have not stopped fighting, resisting and solidarity. Especially, we never stopped missing each other”
“We passed a very important test as Türk Metal.”
Reminding that people struggled to protect themselves and their families during the epidemic process under quarantine conditions, our President Kavlak continued his speech, referring to the work our union carried out for its members in this process and said: “We did not stop like you in these difficult days. As the news of the epidemic came from the Far East, we immediately thought of taking measures as we heard how the economies and workplaces were affected there. In the first days of the epidemic, we took action when no one even understood what was yet. Considering the future, we took an important step regarding the damages we may face. After the first casualties were heard and the virus spread rapidly in mid-March, we first made arrangements for production by signing a joint text with the employer's union MESS. In this process, we, as Türk Metal, passed a very important exam. And we passed this exam successfully. We are the union that experienced this epidemic period most successfully. This protocol we signed made us very comfortable in this process. While our state has not taken any measures yet, we have strengthened our hands by putting the article stating that no workers will be fired in this process. No workers were fired from any workplace. According to the agreement we made, our members did not lose income. Everyone got their full wages. We immediately took action as soon as the illness started. By adding an additional item to our Complementary Health Insurance application, we have made it possible for our friends who receive treatment to benefit from hospitals free of charge. "
“We all united against this attack on the right to severance pay.”
Kavlak stated that the country's economy was going through a very difficult period during the epidemic process, and pointed out that in this process, workers' rights were again undermined and two shames were brought to the agenda for the severance pay of workers: “In this process, we stood upright as the TÜRK-İŞ community. We struggled. We all united against this attack on the right to severance pay. More or less we fought one way or another. We have repulsed this attack for now. After that, we need to maintain the same determination. That's why I repeat once again. Severance pay is our last castle. It is the last title deed in the hands of the working class. Let's not pierce that deed. Let's claim it like our honor”
Kavlak reminded that both the administrators and the employers have responsibilities towards the laborers and concluded his words as follows: “This country has a debt to you who work at the expense of their lives in pandemic conditions. Everybody owes the children of these lands who protect their state under the most difficult conditions, pay the price, give martyrs. Not only our state, but also the bosses who have turned their wheels, broke production records and doubled their profits during the pandemic process have a debt to you. This is not just a debt to be passed over with a thank you. It is a big debt. Little is left. Those days are coming. This debt will be paid to you very soon as you deserve. Don't worry. Our employers, those who spin their wheels, add profit to their profits, will pay their debt to you. Because we worked to death. Do not forget these words. Because this will be our main slogan in the collective bargaining negotiations that we will start this autumn.”
“We worked to death."
